2017 Utah Dance Film Festival

JOIN US for the 4th Annual Utah Dance Film Festival!

The fourth annual Utah Dance Film Festival will be held at SCERA Center for the Arts in Orem, Utah on February 24-25, 2017. This two-day event will screen over 50 films from seven different countries and give attendees the opportunity to participate in dance and film workshops, sponsored by The Utah Film Commission.

The weekend will culminate with the Awards Showcase, featuring the winning films from the festival. Also, audiences will enjoy live performances from SALT Contemporary Dance Company, Jen Pendleton’s Falling State performing group, Hip Hop group, Millennium The Company SLC, under the direction of Kylie Bronk and Utah County’s Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company.

2017 UTAH DANCE FILM FESTIVAL WORKSHOP SERIES

Jay Carlon, a dance-based multimedia visual artist from Los Angeles, CA, will be the Keynote presenter and teacher. He will be presenting his site-specific digital series of dance film selfies and teaching a workshop to guide other artists to create their own works using smartphone technology.

Karen Jensen and her BYU creative team, Shayla Bott, Scott Cook and Sara Coray, will present, From Staged Work to Screendance: The Processes and Experiences of a Group Film Collaboration. This presentation will document the collaborative processes of transforming a staged contemporary ballet to a screendance. Topics to be discussed include developing a concept and storyboard, costuming, location scouting, filming, editing and music composition. The collaborators will discuss the successes and challenges in creating the film.

Award winning filmmaker Skyler Sorenson and dance educator Katie Bruce will lead a symposium called Movement Through a Lens which configures production skills for screen dances.

Dancers from SALT Contemporary Dance will be presenting a contact improvisation dance workshop for both participation and observation.

Jen Pendleton, will present a contemporary movement class for both participation and observation.

UTAH DANCE FILM FESTIVAL FILM SUBMISSION INFORMATION

SUBMISSION FEE

$50 per entry / $35 student rate, submitted by December 15, 2016

+ $10 late fee per entry, accepted through December 24, 2016

SUBMISSION RULES

1- Films of any genre, style, length will be considered for acceptance

2- Films MUST BE appropriate for all ages, as we are a community-centered Festival (slight changes may be requested upon acceptance according to the UDFF organization’s digression. Filmmaker may choose whether or not to make adjustments to be accepted).

3- Filmmaker must fairly choose between Professional or Pre-Professional categories for adjudication

4- Provide viewing link and password for your film through application

5- Provide 1-2 screenshots for your film through application

6- Provide as much information for your film as possible through application

FILMMAKER BENEFITS

1- Admission to all UDFF workshop, screening, and networking events during the 2017 Festival

2- “Official UDFF Selection” laurel for film promotion

3- Eligibility for filmmaker awards (some cash and some noncash)

4- Participation in Filmmaker/Cast/Crew Q&A sessions during Festival

5- Networking opportunities in the dance and film industries

-January 10, 2017 – Official Selection List posted/emails sent for accepted and declined films + Filmmaker packet sent

-January 15, 2017 – Filmmaker Packet return deadline– final film formats due

-February 24, 2017 – Filmmaker Check-in

-February 24-25, 2017 – 2017 UDFF event in Orem, Utah

-February 25, 2017 – Awards Showcase
